Energy and Resources:

Experience gained over 27 years in a range of technical, management, strategic advisory and consulting roles in the areas of upstream development and operations, global and regional energy markets, including downstream gas distribution, electricity generation and gas and power marketing in competitive and developing markets.

  • Worked with the CEO and Executive team of a multi-national energy company to review strategy, and gain Board and Investor support leading to substantial growth in value over 5 years
  • Advised the executive of a gas and LNG production company on organization restructuring to improve performance of a $20 billion dollar project. Supported change during implementation
  • Led a cost-reduction project reducing organizational costs in an upstream operating business by $220 million (14%)
  • Designed the organization of a non-operated joint venture business unit to support development of major oil discoveries
  • Developed a performance improvement strategy in an upstream business to drive significant reductions in opex/boe
  • Advised GM Strategy of an integrated energy company on upstream portfolio and mergers and acquisitions strategy

Capital Projects:

Experience in developing project delivery organisations, both at portfolio level and individual major projects from $200m to $20 billion. Expertise includes: organization design, role design, leadership development, establishment of project performance management and reporting systems, and interventions to address project performance issues. Conducted lessons learned on project performance and presented at Board level and international conferences.

  • Developed a corporate organization to manage project delivery across an international portfolio
  • Designed and supported implementation of a project delivery organization in the UK-Norway North Sea
  • Designed the organization and key roles of an integrated coal-seam- gas to LNG project
  • Facilitated the design and implementation of an innovative business process for upstream project execution in the world’s first coal seam gas to LNG project
  • Led a lessons-learned exercise following implementation of a $20 billion mega-project and presented findings to the Executive Team and Board of Directors.

Industrial Manufacturing and Infrastructure:

Wider exposure to asset intensive industries including chemicals, pharmaceuticals and transportation, including rail with a focus on investment strategy and operational performance improvement.

  • Managed a strategic review of reinvestment options for a European chemical business that faced technology investment in the light of aging legacy plant and significant shifts in market demand for products. Strategy options developed formed the basis for valuation of the company, leading to its sale to a private equity buyer.
  • Reviewed the supply chain of a European rail company, identifying waste reduction ideas equivalent to 30% of capital investment.

Services Sector:

While my experience is largely focused on asset intensive industries, the principles of operations design are equally applicable to service and knowledge-intensive environments. Consulting experience in the services sector includes;

  • Advised the MD of a project services company on strategic response to a down-turn in the sector
  • Designed a shared services unit for facilities management, accommodation and travel within an oil and gas business
  • Advised the Executive team of a global top 100 university on development of an administrative performance improvement program
